Abstract
To identify the bacterial spectrum in the recent paranasal sinusitis. The bacterial findings in 112 consecutive patients who underwent endoscopic sinus surgery were studied. Asepic collection of the sinus mucosa from one of the maxillary sinuses
was
made under local anesthesia. All samples were cultured for both aerobes and anaerobes. At least one type of organism was isolated in 103 patients(92.0%), and no bacterial growth could be obtained in the remaining 9 patients((8.0%) even after 2
weeks of
cultivation.
Aerobic organisms were isolated in 82 patients. either alone(61), or mixed with other aerobes(18) or anaerobes(3). Anaerobes were isolated in 24 sinuses, either alone(15)., or mixed with other aerobe(3) and anaerobe(6). Of 101 aerobic isolates,
the
predominant ones were 30 strains of coagulase-negative Staphylococci, Streptococci, and anaerobes, and decreasing isolation of Streptocoocus pneumoniae and H. influenzae.
